Rompin adventure for anglers

Rompin had been closely associated with the Rompin national park, a place to feel the natural attraction of tropical jungle undisturbed by human for millions of years. It is also known for the famous Tioman Island, a heaven for divers and snorkeling.

Now Rompin is creating a new niche for the sport fishing. A team of 72 delegates from China were testing the lines. The full story was captured by the star newspaper below:

ROMPIN: The Fish Tales Adventures held here for the first time attracted a 72-member delegation from China, including a member of the popular 1970s Hong Kong Canto band - the Wynners.

Pang Kuen Sun, who is an avid angler, emerged the joint champion in Boat 8 with three other Hong Kong crew members - Ng Wing Kin, Chan Ming Yin and Yeung Wai Chi.

The other winner was Boat 11 comprising Guo Hui Da, Hong Zhi Qiang, Hong Ke Qiang and Lin Jun Yi from Fujian province, China.

Both teams received prizes totalling RM17,500, trophies and fishing equipment from Rompin assistant district officer Norzilah Manaf, witnessed by Pahang Tourism Action Council general manager Idros Yahya and Fish Tales Adventures Sdn Bhd executive director Kenneth Chen.

The Summerset Resort played host in the five-day programme.

Idros said the programme had received the support of Tourism Ministry to promote angling activities, particularly billfish fishing in the Rompin district of Pahang.

He said the programme was also mooted to foster closer ties with China and to promote Malaysia and its places of interest.

“Initially, we had more than 100 participants from China and Hong Kong, and had reserved at least 20 boats for the programme.

“However, due to the H1N1 scare, some decided to cancel their participation at the eleventh hour,” he said, adding that in the end only 13 boats took up the billfish challenge.

Idros said some of the participants also brought along their families to holiday in Pahang.

“For them, we arranged tours to Tioman, Endau Rompin forest reserve and Kuantan.”

As for the Fish Tales Adventures competition, he said that response was encouraging for the pioneer event, adding that there were plans to sell such tour adventures to more countries.

He said Pahang would work closely with the ministry to promote Rompin as a billfish fishing haven.

“These tailored tours are aimed at showing the undiscovered game fishing spots in Malaysian waters.

“The itineraries will be designed to enable participants to not only enjoy fishing but also experience Malaysian food and culture as well as visit popular tourist sites,” added Idros.
