chingay magic

The esplanade will be holding chingay competition bringing the magic to Penang.

Both the locals as well as the tourists, will be enthralled by the All-Star National Chingay Competition, set to take place at the Esplanade in Penang.

So far, a total of nine teams from various states have confirmed participation in the contest, a competitive version of the street art, that requires practitioners to balance giant flags on various parts of their body.

Speaking during a recent press conference to announce the event taking place on Dec 18 from 7pm to 11pm, state Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said the top three teams stand to win RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM2,000 respectively.

The fourth and fifth-placed teams each win RM500.

The champion will also have the honour of performing at the opening ceremony of the Penang Food Festival in Genting Highlands to be held on Jan 14 to Jan 23.

Each team will perform for eight minutes, with judging based on the participants’ skill and difficulty of stunts, as well as their costume, discipline and team spirit.

Registration is open until today, with a fee of RM150 per team of 13 to 15 members.

Chingay teams wishing to participate may register at Law’s office at Level 53, Komtar.

The game will involve a group of people carrying colorful poles and dancing in the street to the music. It is a testing time when you have a strong wind and you have to pass the pole to your colleagues.
