Penang Horse Show

The Penang Horse show is back on the weekend on 18 Dec 2010. It will be held at the Penang Turf Club starting on Saturday and ended on Sunday.

The visitors will be treated to the highlight of the show, that will be the demonstration of riding skills on a mechanical horse, dubbed ‘Flying Pheonix’.

The PTC Equestrian club’s riding boys and assistants will show visitors how to keep an even keel and not to be thrown off while riding the mechanical horse which is imported from Australia, believe me, riding on one will be more difficult compared to the real horse. Event committee chairman John Alexander Rodgers said the visitors should also not miss watching the skills of a driver handling a “four-in-hand” carriage pulled by four horses.

“It will be the first time where a carriage is pulled by four horses in Malaysia and the driver will display his skills during the demonstration,” he said.

Gently does it: A boy being guided as he patted the head of a donkey at a horse show in Penang last year.

Besides that, there are also an exposition of equine products and services, a bazaar of 30 stalls selling various trinkets and souvenirs, a breed display of 14 types of horses, a farriery tournament and an equestrian competition.

Clowns, a puppet show and face paintings are among the many events in store for the young visitors.

Children can also enjoy pony and carriage rides and watch daring stunts by fire-eaters, jugglers, and snake charmers while adults will be entertained by the Penang State Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Another event to look out for at the show is the use of Malay traditional music of Gamelan for the dressage and show-jumping demonstrations with the help of a seven-man Gamelan troupe from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

State Tourism Committee chairman Danny Law will attend the 10am opening ceremony tomorrow before touring the equine exposition and carnival grounds.

He will witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Malaysian Equestrian Association, represented by PTC president Datuk Ong Eng Khuan, and Equestrian Australia, represented by its National Education manager Ben Harris.

The MOU will see the use of the Australian System of Coaching Qualifications for the accreditation of local coaches.

Accompanying Ong will be PTC senior committee member Datuk Seri Teh Choon Beng, who is the adviser of the 2010 Penang Horse Show.

PTC general manager Leow Khin Ming said the public would have the opportunity to learn more about the various types of horses at the breed display as well as taste the sumptuous hawker offerings at the nearby food court.

He said the organising committee had taken extra care to incorporate many interesting features to ensure that the carnival would be an enjoyable one.

“The turf club will play host to children from several orphanages and has also invited school children from nearby schools to join in the fun,” he said.

Another crowd-puller should be the dressage competition where riders from 12 riding clubs will compete in the dressage, show jumping and carriage driving competitions.

The riders will vie for the JA Rodgers’ Cup 120cm, Junior Rider Penang Classic, Young Rider Penang Classic and the Penang Classic 120cm.

Admission to the penang horse show is free.
